Akathist to our Sweetest Lord Jesus Christ

Christus Pantokrator

Kontakion 1

To you, Champion Leader and Lord, the Vanquisher of Hades, I, your creature and servant, offer a song of praise, for you have delivered me from eternal death. But as you have inextinguishable loving-kindness, deliver me from all dangers that can be, that I may cry to you: Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Ikos 1

Creator of angels and Lord of hosts, as of old you opened the ear and tongue of the deaf and dumb, likewise open now my perplexed mind and tongue to the praise of your most holy name that I may cry to you:

Jesus, most wonderful, angels’ astonishment!
Jesus, most powerful, forefathers’ deliverance!
Jesus, most sweet, Patriarch’s exultation!
Jesus, most glorious, Kings’ stronghold!
Jesus, most beloved, Prophets’ fulfillment!
Jesus, most marvelous, martyr’s strength!
Jesus, most peaceful, monk’s joy!
Jesus, most gracious, priests’ sweetness!
Jesus, most merciful, fasters’ abstinence!
Jesus, most tender, saints’ rejoicing!
Jesus, most honorable, virgins’ chastity!
Jesus, everlasting, sinners’ salvation!
Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me!

Michael Leunig – We give thanks for the mystery of hair

hair

We give thanks for the mystery of hair.
Too little here and too much there.

Censored and shaved, controlled and supressed:
Unwelcome guest in soups and sandwitches.
Difficult growth always needing attention.

Gentle and comforting;
Complex and wild;
Reminding us softly
That we might be animals.

Growing and growing
‘Til the day that we die.
And the day after as well
So they say!

In all of its places
And in all of its ways
We give thanks for the blessing of hair.

Amen!

A Mother’s Prayer for Mental Illness

St Dymphna
St Dymphna, patron saint of
those with mental disorders

As I stumble from my bed this morning, help me to remember to be gentle and kind.
My daughter’s mind is shredding into a million pieces. She lives in a constant state of atrocious fear. I can see it in her eyes. Give her peace.

Guide me as I hold her in my arms. Help me to know what to say. What to do. Fill my heart with healing love, understanding, and empathy.

Give me the strength of a thousand angels to hold back my tears. My heart is broken and a tidal wave of grief is overwhelming me with the need to cry. Give me the strength to bear it long enough to keep it from disturbing my child. Help me find someone I can safely bring it to.
Help me answer my family’s questions with the same amount of compassion I would want for myself. Help me remember they are hurting too. This is an unwelcomed assault on an entire family. My heart is not the only heart that is broken. We all need time and each other to heal. Continue reading

Leunig – We Give Thanks for Places of Simplicity

simplicity

Dear God,

We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace;
let us find such a place within ourselves.

We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty;
let us find such a place within ourselves.

We give thanks for places of nature’s truth and freedom,
of joy, inspiration and renewal,
places where all creatures
may find acceptance and belonging.

Let us search for these places;
in the world, in ourselves and in others.

Let us restore them.
Let us strengthen and protect them
and let us create them.

May we mend this outer world
according to the truth of our inner life
and may our souls be shaped and nourished
by nature’s eternal wisdom.

Amen!

Leunig – Prayer for Our Dreams

Dear God

We give thanks for the darkness of the
night where lies the world of dreams.
Guide us closer to our dreams
so that we may be nourished by them.

Give us good dreams and memory of them
so that we may carry their poetry
and mystery into our daily lives.

Grant us deep and restful sleep
that we may wake refreshed with strength
enough to renew a world grown tired.

We give thanks for the inspiration of stars,
the dignity of the moon
and the lullabies of crickets and frogs.

Let us restore the night and reclaim it
as a sactuary of peace,
where silence shall be music to our hearts
and darkness shall throw light upon our souls.
Good night. Sweet dreams.

Amen!
